Established in 2016, ARC Vets is an independent NZ family-owned referral practice with two state-of-the-art small animal hospitals in Auckland, ARC Central Ltd in Freemans Bay, and ARC North Ltd in Albany. We’re a 24/7 operation with an incredible team of specialists in surgery, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, cardiology, neurology, oncology, dermatology, and critical care. ARC North also offers hydrotherapy services. 

We have all the equipment you would expect in a modern referral veterinary hospital including full in-house laboratory suite with Radiometer, multiparameter patient monitors, digital radiography, ultrasound, endoscopy, underwater treadmill, mechanical ventilation, on-site CT and MRI, along with dedicated cat and dog receptions, consulting rooms and wards.

Join Our Team of Casual Emergency Veterinarians at ARC Vets!  

Are you ready to take your veterinary career to the next level? At ARC, we’re looking for passionate and skilled veterinarians to join our dynamic Emergency team on a casual basis.  

The Opportunity  

As a Casual Emergency Veterinarian, you’ll handle a diverse caseload, providing urgent care to emergency patients and managing specialist in patients with support from our collaborative team.   

You will be presented with our open shifts and can choose to work if you are available. 

Position Responsibilities/Tasks  

Your focus will be on providing first-line services including, but not limited to:  

  • Urgent medical, surgical, and critical care services, including resuscitation, stabilisation, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and referral as necessary.  

  • Assessing the urgency and severity of presenting problems through history taking, examination, and investigation.  

  • Recommending and, where appropriate, undertaking treatment options under a treatment plan and performing interventions and procedures, including prescribing, surgery, and client education.  

  • Referring cases to ARC specialists for diagnostic, therapeutic, and support services as required.  

  • Performing surgical procedures (specialists are on call for more complex procedures, and surgical mentorship opportunities are also available for less experienced veterinarians)  

  • Preparing accurate and detailed notes, clinical summaries, and client communications, including liaising with referring vet clinics.  

  • Invoicing for services rendered.

Desired Skills and Experience

What We're Looking For

  • BVSc or equivalent degree recognised by the Veterinary Council of New Zealand 

  • Ability to work in New Zealand  

  • Minimum of 2 years’ veterinary experience in small animal practice OR completion of a 1-year rotating internship.   

  • Emergency experience advantageous but not essential.  

  • Strong verbal and written communication ability  

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment  

  • Commitment to providing outstanding patient care and upholding high clinical standards.  

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a positive, adaptable attitude.  

  • Willingness to grow and learn as part of a collaborative, supportive team. Compliance with the Veterinarians Act, ACVM Act, Animal Welfare Act and ERMA – HSNO Act.  

  • Compliance with Veterinary Council of NZ – Code of Professional Conduct for Veterinarians.
